Dan Stevens has just booked his next major IP.
According to Deadline, the actor has been tapped to star as Alex Murphy and his cyborg alter ego RoboCop in Prime Video‘s upcoming small-screen reboot of the MGM movie franchise. He succeeds Peter Weller, Robert Burke, and Joel Kinnaman in the role.
The casting comes roughly one month after Amazon MGM Studios officially greenlighted the series, which had been in the works for a couple of years. Peter Ocko will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. James Wan is on board as executive producer, alongside Michael Clear and Rob Hackett, through Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
In the eight-episode RoboCop series, written by Ocko, a giant tech conglomerate convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force – a robot implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer, Alex Murphy (Stevens).
Stevens got his breakthrough on the hit period drama Downton Abbey, which he left after three seasons. Since then, he has appeared in major franchises like the Monsterverse and Night at the Museum, while headlining series like Legion and The Terror: Devil in Silver.
He is currently in production on the second season of Paramount+’s Dexter: Resurrection, in which he will play Owen Stark aka the Five Borough Killer. His next film will be Onslaught, which reunites him for a third time with director Adam Wingard. He will also appear in the movie Babies, directed by Lauren Miller Rogan, and will reprise his role as Trapper in Godzilla x King: Supernova.
