Danny Boyle Confirms ’28 Days Later’ Threequel Could Still Happen

Back in 2002, Danny Boyle directed the fantastic post-apocalyptic zombie film, 28 Days Later, based on the script by Alex Garland and starring Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns, and Brendan Gleeson. Five years later, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo followed up with a pretty solid sequel 28 Weeks Later, starring Robert CarlyleRose ByrneJeremy RennerHarold Perrineau, Imogen Poots, and Idris Elba, which saw the virus spreading from the UK to mainland Europe in the film’s cliffhanger ending. Ever since then fans have been waiting to see if there would ever be a follow up the two films and continue the story. And now, hot off the heels of his most recent project, Yesterday, Boyle has confirmed a third movie is in the works.

In a recent interview with The Independent, Boyle said:

“Alex Garland and I have a wonderful idea for the third part. It’s properly good. The original film led to a bit of a resurgence in the zombie drama and it doesn’t reference any of that. It doesn’t feel stale at all. He’s [Alex Garland]concentrating on directing his own work at the moment, so it’s stood in abeyance really, but it’s a you-never-know.”

Now that doesn’t mean it will be his next project or anything, but at least it still gives fans some hope for a new film and make it solid zombie trilogy. Maybe even leaving room for a fourth film if we are lucky.

Garland, who scripted the original and went on to direct critically-acclaimed sci-fi films Annihilation and Ex Machina, has been working on an eight-part FX series, called Devs,  which will likely premier later this year.

I really liked the both films, they both had really great casts, which a bit ahead of their time to be honest, but I haven’t watched either in years. Now seems like a good time to bring the franchise back and spread the Rage Virus around a little more. I’ll probably throw both of these on sometime in the near future to give myself a little refresh.

What do you guys think? Interested in a third film in this series?
