It’s official: Paramount is making a sequel to Days of Thunder.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jonathan Levine has been tapped to direct the legacy sequel, which will once again star Tom Cruise.
Levine counts 50/50, Warm Bodies, The Night Before, and Snatched among his directorial credits. His next feature, Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story, stars Superman‘s David Corenswet as the title football running back, who was drafted by the New York Giants as the final selection of the 1983 NFL draft. Paramount is releasing the sports biopic this Christmas.
Cruise will also produce Days of Thunder 2 with Jerry Bruckheimer, one of the producers of the original. The sequel is intended to be Cruise’s next production.
The original Days of Thunder reteamed Cruise with his Top Gun helmer Tony Scott. The actor played hotshot NASCAR racer Cole Trickle, appearing opposite a stellar cast that included Robert Duvall, Nicole Kidman, Cary Elwes, and Randy Quaid.
Story details for the sequel are being kept under the hood. However, it is being written by Will Staples, who has written video games such as Call of Duty 3: Modern Warfare, and co-wrote the Michael B. Jordan action movie Without Remorse.
