Edgar Wright is attaching himself to another beloved IP.

According to Deadline, Wright is in negotiations to direct Barbarella, a new feature-length adaptation of Jean-Claude Forest’s French comic book series. Jane Goldman and Honey Ross have been tapped to pen the screenplay.

Barbarella was previously adapted to film in 1968 starring Jane Fonda. Sydney Sweeney will star in and executive produce the new adaptation. While plot details remain under wraps, the original film followed “an astronaut from the 41st century who sets out to find and stop the evil scientist Durand Durand, whose Positronic Ray threatens to bring evil back into the galaxy.”

Wright has reportedly been eyeing the project for some time, taking a meeting with Sweeney right after it was first announced. However, he only committed to developing the project as something he would potentially direct.

Despite these updates, Barbarella remains in early development. Sweeney has a busy schedule and Wright is currently deep in prep on The Running Man, meaning Barbarella won’t be either’s next project. Coincidentally, The Running Man will star Sweeney’s Anyone But You co-star Glen Powell.

We’ll keep you posted as more information on Barbarella becomes available.
