StudioCanal is working on reimaginings of two iconic ’80s movies.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, StudioCanal executive vp of global marketing and distribution Hugh Spearing announced yesterday at CinemaCon that the company is partnering with The Picture Company to develop a reimagining of John Carpenter’s Escape from New York.
The 1981 cult favorite stars Kurt Russell as prisoner Snake Plissken, who will be granted a pardon if he can rescue the president from insurgents. It was followed by a sequel, Escape from L.A., in 1996.
Hollywood has been trying to make an Escape from New York remake since the mid-2000s, with the project bouncing between several studios and creative teams. Most recently, Radio Silence had been tapped to direct a version for 20th Century Studios in 2022.
Spearing also revealed that a reimagining of horror flick The Howling was also in the works at StudioCanal. Joe Dante’s 1981 original starred Dee Wallace as a television news anchor who ends up at a resort populated by werewolves.
