HBO Max Reportedly Developing ‘Harry Potter’ TV Series

Harry Potter may be heading to the small screen, with a series adaptation of author JK Rowling‘s best-selling books reportedly in early development at HBO Max.

Deadline has confirmed an early report by Bloomberg regarding a potential Harry Potter series. Warner Bros. is in talks with Rowling to join the project as a producer. If the new Wizarding World project moves forward, it is expected that each season of the potential series will focus on one book in the Harry Potter series. This means that fans (and HBO Max) could be looking at seven seasons’ worth of stories.

Despite any controversy Rowling occasionally stirs up online, Harry Potter and the larger Wizarding World franchise is still massively successful. One needs to only look at the recent video game Hogwarts Legacy, which sold 12 million copies in its first two weeks, to see how popular the franchise still is with the fandom.

Now, am I saying that I want a Harry Potter series that adapts the books? Yes and no. Television would allow for storytelling opportunities the films could have never achieved within a 120-150 minute runtime. However, it’s way too early to remake the seven books. Why not give us something original like a Ted Lasso-inspired Quidditch series? Or a proper Fantastic Beasts series that doesn’t shoehorn in Grindelwald? Harry Potter Origins: Dumbledore, anyone?

Not much else is known about this potential series at this time. However, WB has some sort of streaming announcement planned in the next few weeks, so we could learn more about the project at that time. Either way, we’ll keep you posted.
