Kevin Reynolds’ ambitious post-apocalyptic action epic starring Kevin Costner as the gill-equipped Mariner was one of the most infamous box-office disappointments of the 1990s. At the time, Waterworld was the most expensive film ever made (with a budget reportedly exceeding $175 million), and it faced heavy criticism for its bloated runtime, uneven tone, clunky dialogue, and a protagonist many found arrogant and unlikable. The film was mocked relentlessly in the press as “Fishtar” or “Kevin’s Gate,” with detractors pointing to silly elements like the floating atoll cities, questionable science, and what felt like an over-the-top production that never quite lived up to its high-concept premise of a world completely covered by water.
However, Waterworld has aged into a cult favorite for some. The practical effects and large-scale water stunts remain genuinely impressive even by today’s standards, the world-building is considered creative and immersive, and the film delivers exciting jet ski chases, thrilling set pieces, and a committed performance from Costner in the lead. Dennis Hopper chews the scenery entertainingly as the villain Deacon, and the movie’s unapologetic, big-swing 90s blockbuster energy has earned it new appreciation from audiences who enjoy its weird, ambitious scope and practical craftsmanship in an era dominated by CGI.
So what do you think? Is Waterworld overhated or not? Vote and let us know your answer below!
