A live-action Gargoyles series is not moving ahead at Disney+.
Original series creator Greg Weisman told Comics Online in an interview (via Deadline) that the live-action series is no longer in development.
“That’s dead,” said Weisman. “I have no idea about animation, but there are no current plans for live-action.”
A live-action Gargoyles reboot was first reported to be in the works in 2023. Gary Dauberman was tapped to write, executive produce, and showrun the new series for Disney+.
James Wan’s Atomic Monster was also part of the attempted reboot. Atomic Monster previously worked with Dauberman on the Annabelle horror movies, which are part of The Conjuring Universe.
It’s not a surprise that Disney+ scrapped Gargoyles. It would have been a VFX-heavy show, and the streamer seems to be moving away from that sort of content in favor of lower-budget shows like Daredevil: Born Again or the upcoming Afterlife with Archie.
In fact, the live-action reboot may have been quietly canceled so that Disney+ could instead reboot the original cartoon. In July 2026, Brent Spiner, who voiced Puck in the original series, hinted on his podcast Dropping Names with Brent and Jonny that a full-on revival of the animated series was in the works at Disney Television Animation.
What Is Gargoyles?
Gargoyles was a fan-favorite Walt Disney Television Animation series that originally aired from 1994 to 1997. The cartoon involved gargoyle statues moved from a castle in Scotland to modern-day New York. Once in the Big Apple, the statues awaken from a thousand-year-old spell and take on the mantle of protecting the city, becoming, as the show’s narration gravely said, “stone by day, warriors by night.”
The animated Gargoyles series remains available to stream on Disney+.
