To celebrate our seventh anniversary, the ScreenAge Wasteland team is sharing individual lists of our 100 favorite films of all time. Explore the full collection here.
Crafting a “top” movies list is among the most difficult tasks imaginable for a film fan. How the hell are you supposed to define something like that? How many of these are my favorite movies? Which ones represent things that inform my personal taste? Where do I fit in movies that I appreciate as crucial to understanding the medium as a whole? And how do I find the balance in all of that?
After far too many hours spent racking my brain, consulting my movie loving friends and community, sifting through my personal physical media collection, and referencing my Letterboxd account, I finally came to the conclusion that this is an impossible thing to definitively declare. This list will always be a snapshot in time. These are the movies that define me right now. On any given day, any of these could be my single favorite movie. Or any of them could be replaced by another remarkable movie, or a new discovery that knocks my socks off.
I guess that’s the incredible thing about cinema. We never truly know what’s going to speak to us. Art is all subjective. As much as we want to, there’s really no way to objectively make sense of or quantify how we respond to it.
Which isn’t to say this wasn’t a fun or worthwhile exercise. I had a blast constructing this. I hope you have a blast scrutinizing it :).
