James Wan and Derek Kolstad Adapting Time Travel Short Story ‘Hunting Season’

Reading Time: 2 minutes

James Wan is teaming up with Derek Kolstad (John Wick) and Don Murphy (Transformers) to adapt Hunting Season, a time travel short story by Frank M. Robinson that was originally published in 1951.

THR had the scoop. Wan will produce with partner Michael Clear via Atomic Monster, and Murphy. Kolstad will write the script. No director is attached yet, but c’mon, we’d all love Wan to take a crack at it.

The film will follow “a law officer from the future who is declared an enemy of the state and sentenced to be executed by that society’s method of choice: sent to the past where they are stalked by a posse. The man has three days to acclimate to our time and find a way to survive.” That’s pretty similar to the short story synopsis which is about a “militaristic society of tomorrow where subversives are sent back to past ages where aristocrats hunt them for sport. Usually, the hunted are members of the lower classes. But when an aristocrat is condemned to be hunted in mid-twentieth century America, the entire fabric of society comes unraveled.”

I sort of like the idea of an aristocrat being sent back and hunted because he would be desperate to try and find a way to survive in those three days. He’d be extremely unprepared given his pampered life style. A law officer will no doubt be able to adapt much quicker.

Overall, I’m really digging this time travel concept. It looks like it has a bit of Looper in it which I am all for. We’ll have to wait and see if Wan finds time to direct this project after Aquaman 2, but fingers crossed if he doesn’t direct he finds someone equally as good.

What do you think of the idea behind Hunting Season? Do you think it will make for a good film?
