You can’t keep a good actor like Cynthia Erivo stuck in the fantasy musical genre forever.

While she will be seen later this year reprising her role of Elphaba in Universal’s Wicked: For Good, Erivo has lined up her next movie role and it’s about as far removed from Oz as possible. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-nominated actor has joined Karoshi, an upcoming action-thriller at Lionsgate that will begin production this June.

Erivo joins a cast that currently includes Teo Yoo (Past Lives) and Isabel May (1923). Takashi Doscher, who was behind the 2019 post-apocalyptic thriller Only, wrote the script and is directing. Plot and character details are being kept under wraps, but the movie has been described as a corporate thriller with a samurai twist. The story is set in a Japanese-influenced New York City and features a revenge twist. In Japanese, “karoshi” refers to an unexplained sudden death related to overwork.

Chad Stahelski, the mastermind behind the John Wick franchise, is producing through his 87Eleven Entertainment along with Alex Young and Jason Spitz.
