Marvel Studios has a new recap series on Disney+ called Marvel Studios: Legends. The basic gist is that the series will provide six to seven minute refreshers on the MCU’s heroes and villains before their respective Disney+ series debuts on the streaming platform.
Last week, episodes on Scarlet Witch and Vision were released to tie into the upcoming premiere of WandaVision. They are pretty straight forward recaps of the characters’ journeys so far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Vision’s focused on his beginnings as JARVIS up to his death in Avengers: Infinity War. Scarlet Witch’s began with her post-credits scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and ended with Avengers: Endgame. Legends will no doubt be an excellent companion piece for the Disney+ series, but—in the case of Scarlet Witch—they could also improve previous scenes from the films.
The scene in question that I think Legends improved upon was Scarlet Witch’s confrontation with Thanos in Endgame.
The scene is notable for the “You took everything from me” / “I don’t even know who you are!” exchange which has become a popular online meme. Of course, Scarlet Witch is referring to the death of Vision, which came at the hands of Infinity War‘s Thanos. Endgame‘s Thanos is from 2014 and therefore has no clue who Scarlet Witch even is. The resulting fight between the two of them is a crowd pleaser and really gave us our best look at what Scarlet Witch is capable of with her powers.
However, Legends makes an interesting editing choice when inserting that footage into Scarlet Witch’s recap episode. It splices it together with black-and-white flashbacks to her brother Quicksilver and Vision. We see their deaths and what has made Scarlet With lose “everything”. The shots range from really focusing in on her loss (Sokovia, Quicksilver, Vision) to quickly flashing back and forth between inflicting pain on Thanos and kissing Vision (seen at the start of Infinity War). It really makes the fight have more emotional stakes. We all understood what Scarlet Witch meant in her “You took everything from me” line, but the inclusion of the flashbacks adds another layer of depth to that scene.
Legends featured a really unique way of showcasing the grief Scarlet Witch is feeling in Endgame‘s finale. It will be interesting to see how WandaVision addresses the Vision’s death when the series premieres this Friday.
Do you think quick flashback cuts to Quicksilver and Vision during Scarlet Witch’s fight with Thanos would have improved the scene? Have you checked out Marvel Studios: Legends yet? Tell me down in the comments!
