‘Mayday’ Trailer Finds Kenneth Branagh Working Overtime to Distract Us From Ryan Reynolds’ Bland Acting

Apple TV has released an official trailer for Mayday. The upcoming action comedy film was written and directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the geniuses behind Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

I mean, the headline says it all. Kenneth Branagh is giving an awesome performance (as usual), which makes Ryan Reynolds bringing nothing new to the table all the more noticeable. What I wouldn’t give to see someone else (anyone else) in Reynolds’ role here.

Plot Synopsis:

When hotshot U.S. Navy pilot Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly is sent on a top-secret mission into Russian territory at the height of the Cold War, the operation implodes, leaving him stranded behind enemy lines. Discovered by Nikolai Ustinov, a gruff ex-KGB agent with a penchant for American culture, Troy thinks he’s toast — but could an unlikely alliance between the two lead to Troy’s rescue and a bond neither saw coming?

Mayday arrives on Apple TV on September 4, 2026.
