Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf & More Join Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis’

Aubrey Plaza and Shia LaBeouf are the latest high-profile additions to Francis Ford Coppola‘s epic Megalopolis. Also joining the cast are Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Grace Vanderwaal, Kathryn Hunter, and James Remar. According to Deadline, no character details have been released for any actor.

The actors are set to star alongside the previously announced Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, and Laurence Fishburne. Megalopolis is billed as “a story of political ambition, genius and conflicted love, the fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to solve its own social problems.”

Coppola has been wanting to make this film since the ’80s. Back then, he wanted to parallel the fall of Rome with that of a futuristic America with the film focusing on an architect reconstructing New York City after a massive disaster. It’s unknown how much has changed from that initial idea or if the story has largely remained the same since the ’80s.

What we do know is that Coppola will direct the independently produced film from his own script. The budget is reportedly just south of $100 million. Production will kick off in Georgia this fall. I’d expect to see this one in theaters in late 2023 or 2024.

What do you think of the cast Coppola has assembled? Does Megalopolis have your money?
