It’s officially a go for Miami Vice ’85.
Announced on the movie’s new social media pages, Miami Vice ’85 is now in production. Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) is directing the reboot from a script by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler). A first look at Austin Butler as Detective James “Sonny” Crockett and Michael B. Jordan as Detective Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs can be viewed above.
The supporting cast includes Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone, Walton Goggins, John Leguizamo, Danny Ramirez, Andre Holland, Michael Irby, and Whitney Peak.
Who Is Everyone Playing in Miami Vice ’85?
Character details remain under wraps for everyone except Irby. He’ll play Lt. Lou Rodriguez, the boss of Metro-Dade Police Department’s Organized Crime Bureau, Vice Division, who was played in the original ’80s show by Gregory Sierra.
Don’t remember him? Well, it’s likely because Rodriguez was killed off after four episodes at Sierra’s request because he didn’t want to move to Miami. Edward James Olmos was then cast as Lt. Martin Castillo beginning in the sixth episode of Season 1. He remained with the show until its end.
It’s been stated right from the start that Miami Vice ’85 is pulling a lot of inspiration from the pilot episode, so it makes sense why Rodriguez is in this movie instead of Castillo. The movie also promises to explore the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami.
Miami Vice ’85 is being filmed for IMAX and is set for release in theaters on May 19, 2028.
