Michelle Rodriguez is Back for ‘Fast & Furious 9’ After Female Writer Hired

Michelle Rodriguez will be getting behind the wheel once more as Letty for Fast & Furious 9. The actress, according to Bloomberg, has agreed to return for the next installment after a female writer was hired to work on the script.

Rodriguez had made it clear in the past that she might not return if the franchise didn’t start giving the female characters more development and growth. Franchise star Vin Diesel voiced his support, and now it looks like she got what she asked for.

Personally, I’m happy. Fast & Furious has always been about family and the bonds between these various characters. Over the last couple of films we’ve lost too many characters to on-screen and real life death (#JusticeForHan, Rest in Peace Paul Walker). With Rodriguez back on board, Fast & Furious 9 can begin to feel whole again.

The rest of the Fast Family is expected to return as well, including Jordana Brewster as Mia Toretto. John Cena is the first new cast member to join the film. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are expected to sit the next adventure out since they have a solo spin-off out this August (and because Johnson and Diesel got into a feud during production of Fate of the Furious).

There’s also a female-centered Fast & Furious spin-off in the works that could feature Rodriguez and the other Fast women facing off against Charlize Theron.

Fast & Furious 9 drifts into theaters May 22, 2020.

Are you glad Rodriguez is returning? Who else from the Fast & Furious past do you want to see return?
