The Naomi Watts-led Game of Thrones prequel is dead. HBO confirmed Friday that the prequel rumored to be titled The Long Night has in fact gone the way of the Night King. The show’s pilot episode filmed in Northern Ireland was in post-production, with S. J. Clarkson directing a screenplay by Jane Goldman and George R. R. Martin serving as co-creator. Reports indicate that the series would have been set thousands of years before the original GoT series and focus on the White Walkers.
I can’t say that I’m disappointed in the cancellation, since there are more GoT prequels in the pipeline at HBO. Though everyone that followed the series should take solace and recall that the original pilot episode for GoT was a reported disaster, causing re-shoots and re-writes. So don’t hang your heads Thronies! We’ll have more GoT! I’m sure something else will be announced … very soon.
