DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran just confirmed the first voice actor for its upcoming stop-motion animated film Dynamic Duo.
In an interview with Collider for DC Studios’ Clayface, Safran confirmed Mason Thames‘ casting as Dick Grayson, the first Robin (and later Nightwing), in Dynamic Duo. TheInSneider broke Thames’ involvement in Dynamic Duo back in September.
“We always talk about wanting volunteers and not recruits to be part of the DCU, to be part of DC Studios, and Mason always wanted to be Dick Grayson. He just did. And he came in, and auditioned the s*** out of it, and was awesome. He’s a wonderful young actor, but boy, did he want this,” Safran shared. “He was just obsessed. When he came over to the DC offices, he came over with his dad at the time, and we’ve got tons of great archives and stuff in there, and wanted to take a picture of everything and with everything. He’s a fan.”
Thames made his acting debut in 2017, but didn’t rise to prominence until 2021 when he played the lead role of Finney Blake in the horror film The Black Phone. He reprised the role in its 2025 sequel, Black Phone 2. That same year, the actor received wider recognition for his portrayal of Hiccup in the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon. His other film credits include Regretting You (also 2025), Nimrods, and Idiots (both 2026). Up next for the actor, besides Dynamic Duo, is the John Wick spinoff Caine.
While Safran only confirmed Thames’ casting, there’s a good chance that the rest of TheInSneider‘s casting report is accurate. This means that Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire‘s Logan Kim is voicing Jason Todd, with Lee Pace as Red Hood One and Steve Buscemi as Red Hood Two.
Dynamic Duo Reimagines the Origins for Batman’s First Two Robins
Announced in October 2024, Dynamic Duo is an upcoming stop-motion animated Batman film reimagining the early days of future Robins Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. It’s being made by a new animation studio out of New Orleans named Swaybox and that studio’s husband-and-wife creators Arthur Mintz and Theresa Andersson.
Swaybox uses a technology known as “Momo animation,” which is a cross between CGI animation, practical elements of stop-motion, and live-action real-time performance. Safran described the technology to Collider as being “as original today as Pixar was when it did Toy Story. I really think it’s that different from anything that’s come before it.”
Dynamic Duo will not be part of the DC Universe or Matt Reeves’ The Batman Epic Crime Saga. Instead, it falls under the DC Elseworlds banner, which is reserved for standalone projects.
DC Studios has live-action Batman movies on the way for both the DCU and The Batman Universe. The Brave and the Bold remains in active early development, while The Batman Part II remains in production. Steven Soderbergh recently stepped in to complete filming on the superhero sequel after Reeves had to step away for personal reasons. Reeves is expected to handle post-production duties when he is ready to return.
Dynamic Duo is scheduled to hit theaters on September 22, 2028.
