The Pacific Rim franchise lives on.
According to Variety, following a deal between Legendary Television and Amazon MGM Studios, the live-action Pacific Rim series — first reported to be in development back in August — will stream on Prime Video.
Eric Heisserer is developing the series, which will be a prequel to the original film, as its writer. He will also executive produce under his Chronology banner. “Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself,” Legendary Television president Jason Clodfelter said in a statement in August 2024. “We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular Pacific Rim universe. We are certain their vision will make for an enthralling expansion to Legendary’s beloved franchise.”
What About More Pacific Rim Movies?
According to Variety‘s report, a third Pacific Rim movie hasn’t been completely ruled out yet. The first movie, directed and co-written by Guillermo del Toro, was set in a future where humans are at war with gargantuan sea monsters who’ve emerged from an alternate dimension through a portal in the Pacific Ocean. To combat the monsters, humanity unites to create gigantic humanoid mechas known as Jaegers, controlled by two co-pilots whose minds are joined by a mental link.
A sequel to the 2013 sci-fi movie, titled Pacific Rim Uprising, was released in 2018, with Steven S. DeKnight taking over directorial duties from del Toro. There was also an anime-inspired series, titled Pacific Rim: The Black, that ran for two seasons on Netflix between 2021 and 2022.
We’ll keep you posted as more information about this prequel series becomes available.
