According to Variety, Paramount is developing two new Transformers movies. Deadline chimed in and said that one is expected to be a spin-off of Bumblebee while the other will be a Beast Wars film.
James Vanderbilt (Murder Mystery) is scripting Beast Wars, which are robots that transform into robotic animals like Cheetor (Cheetah), Optimus Primal (Gorilla), Rhinox (Rhinoceros) and more. That leaves Joby Harold (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) writing the Bumblebee spin-off.
However, Variety’s sources claim that the Bumblebee spin-off could end up being a reboot of the main Transformers film series and not be set in Bumblebee‘s universe. Which would just be stupid if you ask me.
Bumblebee already acted as a soft-reboot of the Transformers film series. It earned solid reviews from critics and made a nice pile of change for the studio. It was applauded for having more heart than explosions.
Plus the ending (or post-credits scene) confirmed that Bumblebee was diverging from the Bay-timeline. I was all set for a 1980s set Transformers film. Now it seems like that might not happen.
Personally, I’m hoping to see the Transformers series continue into the late ’80s-early ’90s time period. The present day Transformers films ran out of a steam a long time ago. It’s time to hop into our Transformers DeLorean and head back to the ’80s: the original toys-to-cartoons era.
Oh, and throw Beast Wars into the ’80s too. Then we can have a crossover where they fight each other for some reason.
So what are your thoughts on more Transformers? Would you rather see a full-on reboot or another film set in the Bumblebee universe?
