It’s been a good week for 1960s TV shows you didn’t think needed a movie remake, but are going to get one anyway.
Just days after it was revealed that John Mulaney is circling a Get Smart movie at Warner Bros., Deadline is reporting that Paramount has begun development on a Hawaii Five-O movie with filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton.
Cretton is developing the project with the intention of directing. Chris Bremner (Bad Boys for Life) will write the script with Noah Oppenheim (Jackie). The package was put together by Entertainment 360’s Guymon Casady with the estate of series creator Leonard Freeman. Paramount received first crack at the project because of the original series and remake done at CBS.
Created by Freeman, the original Hawaii Five-O ran for 12 seasons on CBS from 1968 to 1980. Jack Lord starred as Steve McGarrett, the no-nonsense lawman who headed a state police task force in Hawaii.
The modern-day remake ran for 10 seasons on CBS from 2010 to 2020. It starred Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim, and Grace Park, among others.
If Tom Cruise truly is done with Mission: Impossible, it makes sense that Paramount would want to find a new (yet old) action IP with franchise potential. I mean, who doesn’t want to watch an action-packed blockbuster set in Hawaii?
Cretton is currently the hottest director in Hollywood thanks to the $2.4 billion (and counting) box office success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. While he’s not officially confirmed, he’s expected to return to the director’s chair for the (also unannounced) Spider-Man 5. There’s also Shang-Chi 2 at Marvel that he’s been developing.
However, Cretton’s next feature will be the live-action Naruto movie for Lionsgate. Filming is slated to begin in the first half of 2027.
