Paramount is ready to plan a heist with Paul Feig.
According to Deadline, Feig is in early talks to direct a follow-up to the 2003 film The Italian Job. The studio is currently on the hunt for a writer.
The Italian Job was inspired by the 1969 British film of the same name, which starred Michael Caine. The 2003 film had F. Gary Gray directing an ensemble that included Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, and Edward Norton.
Given that Deadline is positioning this as a sequel to the 2003 film, I’d wager that Paramount is looking to bring back the original cast. Wahlberg, Statham, and Theron are all still box office draws (to some degree), so it would make sense to reunite them for the sequel.
I have to say that it’s a bit strange that Feig would want to do a sequel, but maybe he’s a fan of the 1969 original (or the 2003 reboot). The only sequels he’s done have been follow-ups to movies he directed (Another Simple Favor and the upcoming The Housemaid’s Secret) or franchise reboots (Ghostbusters).
