English actor Patrick Stewart has died at the age of 86.

Stewart died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles following “a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia,” longtime spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak announced, via The Hollywood Reporter.

“He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all,” Novak wrote. “We will forever cherish the peaceful ease and reflection on his face, an enduring reminder of his invincible grace.”

Stewart is best known for playing two of sci-fi’s biggest characters: Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987–1994), and later Star Trek: Picard (2020–2023), and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film series (2000–2017), and later the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday will serve as his final film credit.

His other notable credits include Captain Ahab in the USA Network television miniseries Moby Dick (1998), Ebenezer Scrooge in the TNT fantasy television film A Christmas Carol (1999), and as the voice of CIA Deputy Director Avery Bullock in the animated sitcom American Dad.
