Power Rankings: Movies That Surprised Us

The SAW Power Rankings is our weekly ranking of a certain movie-related topic. Please feel free to comment on our rankings and provide a list of your own in the comments below.

The majority of the time we already have our minds made up about a movie before we ever sit down to watch it. By the time we are done, usually whatever we thought is confirmed for good or bad. However, every now and then there is a movie where we didn’t have high or even any expectations that blows us away or we at least find it way more entertaining than expected. This is what we are listing today. Movies that surprised us the first time we watched them.

For me, John Wick stands out above the rest because I was ready for just another dull action film. I hadn’t heard much about it and skipped seeing it in theaters then decided to rent it and ended up falling in love with one of my all-time favorite action movies. I instantly wanted to watch it again and went out to by the DVD. Session 9 was a blind video store rental. I liked the cover and the summary of the film, so I gave it a try and it slapped me in the face. I don’t care for Channing Tatum and it’s a remake of a show I never cared for in the first place. I didn’t watch 21 Jump Street for the first time until a couple of years ago and I was pleasantly surprised by how funny it was. I don’t really care for older movies so having 1931’s M blow me away recently helps get it on this list. And lastly, I Lost My Body. I’m not a huge fan of animated films but this one caught me off guard and has become a frequent recommendation I have been throwing out this past year.
