Eight years after Sicario 3 was first teased, it’s officially becoming a reality.
According to Deadline, Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, and Josh Brolin are set to return for the untitled third Sicario from Black Label Media and Thunder Road. Unfortunately, franchise creator Taylor Sheridan will not be returning to write the screenplay. Instead, that duty will fall to Steven Knight.
Neither Sicario director Denis Villeneuve nor Day of the Soldado helmer Stefano Sollima will be back in the director’s chair for the third movie. Padraic McKinley is on board to direct, having recently made his directorial debut on the 2026 historical drama film The Weight starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe.
Plot details are being kept under wraps. However, it must be great, as the three stars were on board to return only after reading Knight’s most recent draft. McKinley and Knight are currently working on the script with notes from the stars. The goal is to begin production at the top of 2027.
A third Sicario was first mentioned in 2018. In 2023, Molly Smith, who runs Black Label Media with sister Rachel Smith and twin brothers Trent and Thad Luckinbill, told The Hollywood Reporter: “Taylor [Sheridan] always envisioned it as a trilogy, so we have to close it out right. There’s no point in making it unless we can do justice to the true fans of Sicario.”
Lionsgate released the first two films, but according to sources, the plan is to take the project to market. Several studios are already showing interest in the package.
