Taika Waititi Talks ‘Thor: Love & Thunder’ Story; Confirms Korg’s Return

Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi has been doing the interview circuit for his upcoming film Jojo Rabbit. In his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, he confirmed that his character Korg would be return. The character previously appeared in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame.

He also mentioned that the Love and Thunder script is finished, but they haven’t decided whether Hemsworth’s Thor will retain his Endgame appearance or if he will go back to his former muscular physique:

“This is an ongoing debate that we’re still having at Marvel. Cause we’re trying to figure out how long — how many months or years — this is after Endgame, at what point does this take place?”

Chris Hemsworth’s Thor won’t be the only one to hold that name though. Natalie Portman is returning to play Jane Foster/Mighty Thor. In the comics, Jane’s tenure as Thor runs concurrently with her battle with breast cancer. Waititi remains tight-lipped if that aspect of the character will make it into the MCU:

“I think that’s a really powerful part of the books. I think it’s really cool that she’s fighting this thing and there’s two battles going on. Personally, I really love that storyline, but whether it ends up in the film is yet to be seen. We’re not sure if we’re going to do a complete lift of that whole storyline. These things change through the shoot and even when we’re editing sometimes, like, ‘Let’s get rid of that storyline where she’s got breast cancer. We’ll change it to something else, or maybe she’s fine.'”

I think the breast cancer storyline would give Portman a chance to stretch her acting muscles that haven’t really had a chance to shine yet in a Marvel movie. It will also give her character some depth that has been sorely lacking. As for Thor’s physique, I would be down if he rocked a Dad-bod equivalent to the one Jason Momoa had for a while that everyone weirdly criticized him for. I mean, the man was still in better shape than the majority of us.

And of course, who wouldn’t want more Korg?

Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters November 5, 2021.
