Sam Raimi Producing New ‘Evil Dead’ Movie; Directing Original Island-Set Horror Film

Sam Raimi was in attendance at The Grudge‘s NYCC panel, and he dropped some major news. He confirmed that a new Evil Dead movie is in the works. He also revealed that Bruce Campbell would be involved, but only as a producer:

“There’s more Evil Dead coming. [Campbell is] tired of me throwing blood on him. Forty years of Bruce and those sticky syrup shirts… He wants to work again, but he just doesn’t want to play that role right now.”

No more details were released about the upcoming Evil Dead movie, but THR does have the scoop on a new horror project that will see Raimi step back into the director’s chair.

Raimi is set direct a new horror movie set on an island from writers Mark Swift and Damian Shannon. Specific plot details are being kept under wraps, but the project is being described as “Misery meets Cast Away“. Both films are personal favorites that see men pushed to their limits. Misery is about a writer who is taken hostage by a crazy fan and Cast Away sees Tom Hanks stranded on an island for years.

Columbia Pictures is set to release the film, which Raimi seems thrilled about:

“I am thrilled to be reunited with Columbia Pictures and re-teaming with Sanford (Panitch, Sony’s motion pictures group president) and Ange (Giannetti). I have been a fan of Shannon and Swift and we have found the perfect adventure to share with the world.”

Raimi hasn’t directed a horror film since 2009’s Drag Me to Hell, and any film since 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful. Instead, he’s remained active producing horror projects from Crawl to Ash vs Evil Dead.

We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available on these projects.
