It’s been 3 weeks since Lucasfilm released the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and it really got me thinking about some of the other truly fantastic movie teasers from over the years. To me, a great teaser should really do just that… tease you like no tomorrow and leave you wanting more. Kinda like this girl I knew back in my younger years… but I digress. Whether it is a scene filmed just to wet your appetites, actual footage from the film or a sequence of images shown quickly on the screen, if it does a good job, I can guarantee your ass will be in that seat on opening day.
Here’s some of the best teaser trailers from over the years.
10. The Dark Knight (2008)
How does one not get hyped for this after that teaser? Ledger’s sadistic laugh was enough to get me in the theater.
09. Spider-Man (2002)
Easily, one of the best filmed only for the trailer, trailers ever. And thus concluding our super hero section of the list.
08. Jurassic Park (1993)
So simple, so effective. Dinosaurs puts asses in seats.
07. Transformers (2007)
A gritty, dark teaser which turned into a not so good, never-ending, repetitive franchise.
06. Star Trek (2009)
And then Paramount manages to make a great teaser for a franchise everyone thought was long dead.
05. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)
A great trailer to a great sequel, and easily better than any of the sequels/reboots that followed.
04. Cloverfield (2008)
A huge surprise, secretly released in front of Transformers. And easily one of my favorites from that year.
03. The Social Network (2010)
A fantastic visual use of dialogue alone.
02. Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1990)
One minute in and you have no idea it is going to be a Die Hard sequel. And I swear I hear a Star Wars blaster sound in there before the reveal.
01. Alien (1979)
The full version that followed, totally expanded on this one and really gets your heart racing with that screeching and quick snippets from the film. But this one left you wanting more.
