It’s been two and a half weeks since Lucasfilm released the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and it really got me thinking about some of the other truly fantastic movie teasers from over the years. To me, a great teaser should really do just that … tease you like no tomorrow and leave you wanting more. Kinda like this girl I knew back in my younger years … but I digress. Whether it is a scene filmed just to wet your appetites, actual footage from the film or a sequence of images shown quickly on the screen, if it does a good job, I can guarantee your ass will be in that seat on opening day.
Here’s some of the best teaser trailers from over the years.
30. Godzilla (1998)
This trailer alone is better than the movie.
29. The Minus Man (1999)
Another one I never saw originally, but over the years this one has popped up on me. It shows no footage from the movie, and seems harmless enough. Until …
28. Super 8 (2011)
Dude, that train crash is intense.
27. South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut (1999)
By the time this was getting released, I wasn’t really watching South Park much anymore. The movie sucked me back in for years to come.
26. The Thing (1982)
This is the one I remember seeing back in the 80’s that made me want to see this movie immediately.
And while researching this, I found this one that was only on a French DVD. It’s super simple and very effective.
25. Inception (2010)
Short, sweet and bwooooooonnnng!
24. The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Speaking of short and sweet, this one reels you in in under 45 seconds. Fantastic marketing all around.
23. The Shining (1980)
Equally as terrifying, imagine seeing this one on the big screen with no knowledge of the book that preceded it. It plays like the end credits to the movie and makes you cringe at all the blood.
22. A Clockwork Orange (1975)
Kubrick does it once again. This time it’s a fast paced and erratic music video that sums up the film perfectly.
21. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011)
In a similar vein to the previous trailer, this one is edited so perfectly to the song that accompanies it. Although, I still like the use of the original track in Thor: Ragnarok.
