Hulu has released an official trailer for The Hardy Boys, and I am royally pissed. My thoughts after the trailer.
Why the fuck is Joe 12 years old? In all the books, Joe has always been one year younger than Frank. Now he’s four years?! It completely changes their whole dynamic. I already know that Joe will uncover something important in the series, but Frank will dismiss it because of Joe’s age. In the books, Frank and Joe take each other seriously. There’s no “I’m older or smarter than you” bullshit in play. Widening the age gap between the two allows for that to happen. It’s something I hope the TV series won’t do, but at the same time I wouldn’t put it past the writers to do it in order to add some “drama”.
Honestly, I’m surprised The CW didn’t have a Hardy Boys series in development in spin out of its current Nancy Drew series. I would have much rather had a soapy CW Hardy Boys than whatever Hulu thinks they’re doing with the two brother sleuths.
Plot Synopsis:
When a family tragedy strikes, Frank, 16, and Joe, 12, move from the big city to their parents’ hometown of Bridgeport for the summer. While staying with their Aunt Trudy (Bea Santos), their summer quickly comes to a halt when they discover their dad, detective Fenton Hardy (Big Little Lies’ James Tupper) has taken on a secret investigation.
Realizing that their dad may be onto something, the boys and some friends take it upon themselves to start their own investigation — and everyone in town is a suspect.
The Hardy Boys premieres December 4, 2020 on Hulu.
If you’re a fan of The Hardy Boys novels, what are your thoughts on Hulu’s upcoming series? Are you as angry as I am about making Joe a child?
