Just days after Johnny Depp resigned as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3, Warner Bros. has already found his replacement.
Popcorned Planet (and later Deadline) reported that actor Mads Mikkelsen is in talks to join the cast of the third Fantastic Beasts film as its antagonist Gellert Grindelwald. If cast, he would jump immediately into filming the project which is currently shooting.
Fun fact: Thanks to a “pay or play” clause in his contract, Depp will still receive his $10 million paycheck for the film despite only shooting one scene.
Colin Farrell, who played Grindelwald in disguise in the first Fantastic Beasts, was the fans’ top pick to replace Depp. Unfortunately, filming on The Batman prevented Farrell from taking part.
Apparently, Yates is a big fan of Mikkelsen and that may be all the information we need to hear to know that this will be a done deal. I can easily see Mikkelsen with the same hair style and Heterochromia iridium (different colored eyes) that Depp sported in the second film. I don’t like that WB dropped Depp from the project, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think Mikkelsen was a good replacement choice.
As of right now, Fantastic Beasts 3 will hit theaters on July 15, 2022.
Do you think Mikkelsen is a good replacement for Grindelwald?
