Following the success of the docu-series The Toys That Made Us, Netflix is giving it a spin-off. That new series will be called The Movies That Made Us, and it will use the same format as Toys but this time it will focus on, and Karlston is gonna love this … films from the ’80s, well mostly. The episodes will discuss the impact these iconic films had on popular culture. Season one will feature four episodes, each dedicated to Dirty Dancing, Die Hard, Home Alone, and Ghostbusters.
Talking about Toys, series creator Brian Volk-Weiss has said “We have this thing, it’s called the Mount Rushmore of Toys. Every toy needs to have at least one character that could be on the Mount Rushmore of Toys. My wife doesn’t know anything about Transformers, but she knows who Bumblebee is, she knows who Optimus Prime is. So all four toys had to have that.”
But iconic films are a different different entity. There are so many to pick from, and how do you choose one over the other? Volk-Weiss explained how they chose the films for season one: “For Home Alone, we wanted a comedy. That was one thing. We really wanted to do a holiday movie. This show is coming out right around Thanksgiving and we really wanted a holiday vibe. Die Hard obviously is also, to a certain extent, a holiday film. Hopefully people trust us that, maybe you’re not a Dirty Dancing fan, but if you like Die Hard and you like Ghostbusters, you’ll give Dirty Dancing a chance.”
All of that makes sense to me. And I think this is something all of you at SAW will enjoy watching too. I mean isn’t that why we are all here? For the love of movies?
While here’s no official release date yet for The Movies That Made Us, but it’s set to premiere sometime around Thanksgiving.
What do you guys think? Interested in seeing this at all?
