With Independence Day right around the corner, Netflix has released a new teaser trailer for season three of their sci-fi, nostalgia-fueled hit, Stranger Things.
While this trailer isn’t as heavy on plot as the first trailer released in March, it does give us a glimpse into the summer of 1985 where the many moms of Hawkins, including Nancy and Mike’s mother Karen, hang around the community pool with big hair and neon bathing suits to ogle and flirt with hunky lifeguard, Billy Hargrove.
When Stranger Things debuted in 2016, it became the surprise hit of the summer with much of its success due to good old fashioned word of mouth praise. Heavily influenced by 1980s pop culture, Stranger Things gave viewers a unique blend of drama and science fiction, centered around a coming of age story reminiscent of The Goonies and Stand By Me, with perhaps a small dose of IT.
I enjoyed the first season of Stranger Things so much that while I wanted a second season, I worried that the writers would try too hard to elevate the show beyond the popularity of season one that they would deviate from what made the show so special in the first place. Thankfully season two premiered with the same tone and feel as the previous season, along with intriguing new characters, a malevolent entity called the shadow monster, and finally some justice for Barb.
I can admit that season two didn’t quite recapture the same magic as the first, but I feel like it came pretty darn close. The Duffer Brothers are creating quite an intricate universe in Hawkins, Indiana and I’m excited to see where they take us in season three.
As we get closer to the premiere date, I’m hoping to see a couple more teaser trailers like the one above, focused on how some of the other characters are spending their summer in Hawkins.
Stranger Things 3 will be available to stream on Netflix July 4.
What do you guys think? Are you looking forward to the new season of Stranger Things?
