There’s a new Lara Croft in Hollywood, and her name is Sophie Turner.
Per Deadline, Prime Video has confirmed Turner’s casting as the iconic video game character, Lara Croft, which was first reported by the trades last November. In a statement, the actor had the following to say about stepping into the shoes of Lara Croft: “I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina [Jolie] and Alicia [Vikander] with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”
Tomb Raider was greenlit by Prime Video in May 2024, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge writing the series, in addition to serving as an executive producer. At the time, Amazon MGM Studios Head Jennifer Salke referred to the upcoming project as an “epic” and “globe-trotting” series. As part of this official update, Chad Hodge has joined the series as executive producer and co-showrunner. A production start date of January 19, 2026 has also been set for the series.
“I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team,” Waller-Bridge said. “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming…”
