We’re officially heading back to the Danger Zone.

Per VarietyParamount announced during its CinemaCon presentation today that Top Gun 3 is officially in the works. Tom Cruise will return as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, while Jerry Bruckheimer is back as producer.

A third Top Gun movie has been in early development since 2024. Ehren Kruger is believed to be penning the screenplay. He co-wrote Top Gun: Maverick with Christopher McQuarrie. Joseph Kosinski is expected to return as director, as are Miles Teller and Glen Powell as co-stars.

It’s no surprise Paramount would want to return to Top Gun, given that Maverick made $1.5 billion during a time when the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic was still being felt on the box office.

It’s unclear when Top Gun 3 might begin production, although if Kosinski is returning as director, the threequel likely won’t get going until after his Miami Vice reboot. Universal has already dated the reimagining of the iconic ’80s TV series for release in theaters in 2027.

Does the world need another Top Gun movie?
