In a shrewd marketing move, HBO attached a trailer for Westworld Season 3 to last night’s final, divisive episode of Game of Thrones. If fans of genre TV were considering canceling their subscriptions, they may now have a solid reason for holding off.
I have to admit, HBO and Westworld has my attention again. I enjoyed the shit out of Season 1. Though I never got into Lost, it’s what I imagine people felt watching that show back in the day. By the time the season finale arrived, I was all in for Season 2. But two episodes in, it was clear the writers had traded drama for didacticism, and so I bailed. I thought about going back and finishing it several times, but I just never felt motivated.
But this trailer might be the motivation I needed to push through some discomfort and catch up in time for Season 3. But since I never finished S2, I don’t know how it ends, though I can make some guesses after watching that trailer.
It looks like at least a few of the hosts escaped the park and have made it out into the wider world. I’m a sucker for cyberpunk and future-oriented science fiction – especially dystopias – and I like that the world that’s presented to us here eschews the aesthetic tropes of cyberpunk in favor of something more modern and realistic (not unlike the future setting for the 2017 X-Men spinoff, Logan). And I think it’s ballsy to trade the gritty Western setting for something sleek and completely different.
Westworld Season 3 is set to arrive some time in 2020.
What do you think, Wasteoids? Did this make you want to keep your HBO subscription or did Westworld lose you last season, too? I look forward to disagreeing with you in the comments.
