‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ Finds Its Director, Supporting Cast & Release Date

The sidekicks are becoming headliners.

Deadline revealed that Kari Skogland has been set to direct The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the six-part Disney+ miniseries starring longtime MCU actors Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan. Additionally, sources say Daniel Bruhl and Emily VanCamp, both last seen in Captain America: Civil War, are in talks to join.

Plot details are scarce right now, but Falcon accepting Captain America’s shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame is reported to play into the series. With the return of Helmut Zemo and Sharon Carter, there’s a chance that we could be seeing the foundation of the Thunderbolts being formed. Now just add Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt) and Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman) to the cast and I’ll be a happy camper.

Sebastian Stan talked in an interview with Comicbook about where Bucky could go following Endgame:

“I think it’s time for Bucky to go out there and have an identity outside of the circumstances that we’ve met him through. … So, I don’t know, he might do all kinds of things. He might even go on a date. I don’t know. Scary world out there, you know? Apps, things like that. I don’t know what he’s gonna do. I can’t see him on an iPhone…I think it’s gonna be a lot of dealing with Anthony’s character and Anthony himself which is always another character.”

I’m down to see Bucky adapting to the 21st century in the same manner we saw Cap experience in The Winter Soldier. The Bucky/Falcon dynamic is always fun, and past reports have indicated a buddy cop vibe in tone to 48 Hrs. The films may be looking towards future characters, but TV definitely is the future for the original MCU cast.

Shooting begins this October. The limited series is targeting an August 2020 release on Disney+.
