Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys for Life) have been hired by Warner Bros. to direct Batgirl. The film was written by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey) and is planned as an HBO Max exclusive film.
THR broke the news that about the Bad Boys for Life directors helming Batgirl. In a statement, producer Kristin Burr said:
“With Batgirl, we hope to take the audience on a fun ride and see a different side of Gotham. Christina’s script is crackling with spirit. Adil and Bilall have an excited and joyous energy which is infectious, making them the perfect filmmakers for this Batproject. And I’m just psyched I get to be part of the DC universe, which is super cool.”
Batgirl won’t be the the directing duo’s first superhero project though. The filmmakers currently serve as executive producers and directors on the Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ series Ms. Marvel.
It’s not confirmed which iteration of Batgirl will be the star of the film, but all my money is on Barbara Gordon, daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner Gordon. She’s held the mantle the longest. It would be great to see this film set in the DC Extended Universe, so we could see J.K. Simmons return as Commissioner Gordon after his brief stint as the character in Justice League.
Also, fingers crossed that they cast an actual redhead in the role. Or at the very least, they keep Barbara Gordon as a redhead. That’s really my only request. I want Batgirl to have red hair. Don’t let me down, Warner Bros.
