Amazon Remaking ‘Road House’ with Doug Liman and Jake Gyllenhaal

Amazon is officially moving forward with a remake of Road House.

Doug Liman will direct the upcoming remake of the 1989 cult classic, with Jake Gyllenhaal officially set to star in the lead role. The film will reportedly be a reimagined take on the classic ’80s film. Anthony Bagarozzi & Charles Mondry wrote the film’s screenplay.

Here’s what Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke said about the Road House remake:

Road House is a homerun for us. Not only is it a nod to fans of the original, but it is also a big, fun, broad audience movie. We are thrilled to collaborate with [producer] Joel [Silver], Doug, and this great cast led by Jake Gyllenhaal, and for them to come together to reimagine the classic MGM film as an action-packed adventure for our global audience.”

Liman is also “thrilled to put [his] own spin on the beloved Road House legacy,” stating that he cannot wait “to show audiences what [they] are going to do with this iconic role.” The original 1989 film starred Patrick Swayze as James Dalton, a zen bouncer hired to clean up a rowdy Missouri bar.

Joel Silver, who produced the original film for MGM, is back on board to produce the reimagining for his company Silver Pictures. He’s pretty pumped about the remake too. Here’s his statement:

“The original Road House has a special place in my heart and I am so excited to bring this newly imagined version to audiences around the world. Doug and I have each made some big, boisterous action movies and are ready to bring everything we have to this one.”

According to the studio, the new take stars Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a rough-and-tumble roadhouse in the Florida Keys, but “soon discovers that not everything is what it seems in this tropical paradise.” Production is slated to begin later this month in the Dominican Republic.

The rest of the ensemble cast for Road House includes Billy Magnussen, Daniela Melchior, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Lukas Gage, Hannah Love Lanier, Travis Van Winkle, B.K. Cannon, Arturo Castro, Dominique Columbus, Beau Knapp, Bob Menery, and two-time UFC champion Conor McGregor.

Road House will stream on Prime Video. The film does not currently have a release date.
