‘Batgirl’ Shortlist Includes Haley Lu Richardson, Zoey Deutch & More

Warner Bros. and DC Films are currently working on an feature-length adaptation of Barbara Bordon / Batgirl for HBO Max and now we might know who will be playing the caped crusader.

Four names are currently at the top of the shortlist for the DC Comics role. The Wrap reports that Haley Lu Richardson and Leslie Grace are the top two contenders testing this week. Isabela Merced and Zoey Deutch are also in consideration.

Richardson has a pretty stellar filmography and would be quite the snag for all involved if she agrees to take the part. You might have seen her work in films such as The Edge of Seventeen, Columbus, Support the Girls, and Unpregnant.

Grace’s first film role was actually as Nina in this year’s In the Heights. While her limited filmography might make her easy to dismiss, Warner Bros. released In the Heights so there’s bound to be an existing, and recent, relationship between the two that might turn the tide in her favor.

Merced is probably the only actress out of the four to have starred in films that have had massive global appeal. She was the titular character in the live-action Dora the Explorer movie Dora and the Lost City of Gold and she was the female human lead in Transformers: The Last Knight.

Deutch has been working steadily in Hollywood for a while now. I, of course, remember her as Zack’s girlfriend in the final season of Suite Life on Deck, but moviegoers will probably remember her for Before I Fall, Zombieland: Double Tap, and Set It Up. She is also the daughter of actress Lea Thompson (which given my love of Back to the Future I was contractually obligated to mention).

Personally, I would love to see Richardson get the role, but I’d probably be okay with any of the four taking the role. The one thing I better see though is some red hair on Barbara or this fellow ginger might just have to start a mutiny.

No word yet on when production might start on the picture, but filmmaking duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys for Life) are set to direct Batgirl from a script by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey).

What do you think of the four actresses in contention for the role? Who would you like to see cast as Barbara Gordon / Batgirl?
