‘Birds of Prey’ Director Wants Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy Romance in Sequel

I wish I had an ounce of Cathy Yan‘s positivity and optimism, because she’s out here talking about a Birds of Prey sequel.

In an interview with The Wrap, Yan said that if she were to come back to direct the sequel she would introduce Poison Ivy:

“I would love to see Poison Ivy and I would certainly love to see the relationship between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy.”

Before I begin, I want to say that I actually enjoyed Birds of Prey. I thought the titular Birds of Prey were all solid performances and Ewan McGregor definitely killed it as Black Mask (is there a SAWards nom in his future?). However, the plot was unmemorable aside from a few key scenes. There was spectacle, but not enough story.

Plus, the box office returns haven’t probably instilled Warner Bros. with the confidence that a sequel is a good money maker. I like that Yan has ideas for a sequel, and I’m all for reintroducing Poison Ivy in film, but a Birds of Prey sequel probably won’t be that platform for the character.

I do think that Warner Bros. and DC Films should give Yan the keys to Gotham City Sirens though. Have Harley Quinn team up with Poison Ivy against the Gotham City Police Department. Actually explain that Batman is absent or missing from within the universe. Introduce a really good story with a hook.

Yan also mentioned that star Margot Robbie isn’t ready “to let go of Harley Quinn” yet, and Quinn herself seems keen to introduce Poison Ivy. She previous stated in an interview:

“One [character] been pushing for as long as I’ve been pushing for this film is Poison Ivy. I mean, there’s two versions of that, you know, with some comics, it’s friendship, some comics, it’s romantic. Either way, I want to explore that because I just I love their relationship so much in the comics.”

The Poison Ivy/Harley Quinn relationship is one of the more fleshed out aspects of Batman’s rogues gallery. In fact, there’s a potential love triangle aspect between Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, and the Joker. Speaking of whom, how about we let Jared Leto have one more crack at the character? Crime Lord Joker has a lot of potential I think.

Would you like to see Poison Ivy introduced in a future DCEU film? Who would you get to play her?
