Christoph Waltz to Return as Blofeld in ‘Bond 25’

Variety reports that Christoph Waltz is set to reprise his role as super-villain Blofeld in Bond 25. He first appeared in 2015’s Spectre, but the character has been around since Connery’s Bond. He had been previously played by Donald Pleasance, Max von Sydow and Telly Savalas.

Bond 25 sees the return of almost every major Bond character who has ever graced the screen in a Daniel Craig era film. Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Rory Kinnear, Léa Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, and Jeffrey Wright are back as M, Moneypenny, Bill Tanner, Dr. Madeleine Swann, Q, and Felix Leiter. Rami Malek is portraying the film’s antagonist.

I’m excited to see Blofeld back, because Waltz is fantastic in every role he’s in. At the same time, it will be interesting to see if Bond and Blofeld are forced to team up to take down Malek’s character (because that seems to be the trend in Hollywood right now, taking the past villain and teaming them up with the hero to take down the new villain). Waltz’s Blofeld could benefit from a bit more character development and fleshing out, as Skyfall‘s Silva still takes the gold for best recent Bond villain.

Bond 25 hits U.S. theaters April 8, 2020.
