A director for DC Studios’ Clayface movie has been found.

According to The Hollywood ReporterJames Watkins, who recently directed the American Speak No Evil remake, has been tapped to direct Clayface for DC Studios. His other directorial credits include Eden Lake (2008), The Woman in Black (2012), and Bastille Day (2016). Sources state that Watkins met with DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn on Thursday for a final presentation that led him to land the directing gig.

Announced in December 2024, Clayface boasts a screenplay by horror mastermind Mike Flanagan, who unfortunately couldn’t direct due to other commitments. Sources say the film is budgeted at $40 million and is a Hollywood horror tale centering on “a B-movie actor who injects himself with a substance to keep himself relevant, only to find out that he can reshape his face and form, becoming a walking piece of clay.” The version of Clayface who will appear in the movie will be the same one who appeared in the adult animated series Creature Commandos. So yes, Clayface is set in the DC Universe.

Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris will produce through their company 6th & Idaho Productions. With a director locked down, casting will likely begin shortly. We’ll keep you posted on that.

Clayface is scheduled to hit theaters on September 11, 2026.
