It’s gearing up to be a reunion of former sidekicks in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Ahead of his Disney+ series Armor Wars, Don Cheadle will be returning to the MCU as War Machine in next month’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
As WandaVision has shown so far, Marvel Studios seems to be pushing former side characters in the films to the forefront on the Disney+ series. In addition to Scarlet Witch and Vision, WandaVision has been expanding on previously introduced characters like Darcy Lewis (from Thor) and Jimmy Woo (from Ant-Man and the Wasp). They have also introduced major organizations like S.W.O.R.D. which will no doubt play a huge role in the MCU moving forward.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is set after Avengers: Endgame and will explore the legacy of Captain America. Apparently, the government doesn’t want Sam Wilson/Falcon to be the next Captain America (despite being the most qualified for the role). Cheadle confirmed to BroBible during an interview that he will appear in the series, but we don’t know if he will be back as just James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes or if he will be suiting up as War Machine.
It’s possible that Rhodey will act as the Falcon’s government contact. Rhodey knows all about government interference, so perhaps he can lend a hand to Falcon and Winter Soldier when it comes to the new Captain America John F. Walker (Wyatt Russell). Or maybe Rhodey will just stop over for a friendly visit.
We currently don’t know much about the plot of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier which sort of makes it exciting. The series will also feature the return of Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp), Baron Zemo (Daniel Bruhl), and Batroc the Leaper (Georges St-Pierre). Marvel truly loves surprising us and the fact that Don Cheadle will be appearing opens the door to other Avengers with a connection to Captain America possibly appearing as well.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres March 19, 2021 on Disney+.
