Down the Tubes: Opening Animations for ‘80s Japanese Sci-Fi Convention DAICON III and IV are Absolutely Bonkers

Down the Tubes is a (semi) regular feature where we, the SAW staff, share our favorite movie-related videos with the Wasteland.

Please share your video recommendations with us at info.screenagewasteland@gmail.com or on Twitter @SAWasteland.

These were created for the 1981 and 1983 Japanese sci-fi conventions known as DAICON III and DAICON IV by then amateur animators Hideaki Anno, Hiroyuki Yamaga, and Takami Akai; all of which would go on to found or work with animation studio Gainax, the studio responsible for Neon Genesis Evangelion – among others.

There’s just no way to really describe what you are about to say and do it justice. The animations make no narrative sense whatsoever, but they’re must-see for fans of pop culture.

Enjoy.
