First Look & Cast Revealed for DC Animated Film ‘Superman: Red Son’

A first look image (above) has been released for the upcoming DC Universe Animated Original Movie Superman: Red Son, an adaptation of Mark Millar‘s 2003 Elseworlds tale, which posed the question, “What if Superman had been raised in the Soviet Union?”

Released alongside the image was the official cast list for the upcoming film:

  • Jason Isaacs as Superman
  • Diedrich Bader as Lex Luthor
  • Amy Acker as Lois Lane
  • Vanessa Marshall as Wonder Woman
  • Phil Morris as James Olsen
  • Paul Williams as Brainiac
  • Sash Roiz as Hal Jordan
  • Phil LaMarr as Jon Stewart
  • Roger Graig Smith as Batman
  • Travis Willingham as John F. Kennedy, and Russia’s Superior Man
  • William Sayers as Joseph Stalin
  • Ave Zoli as Svetlana

Additionally, Anna Vocino, Greg Chun, Jim Ward, Jason Spisak, and Tara Strong have been cast in undisclosed roles.

There’s only been a handful of DC Universe Animated Original Movies that I haven’t watched since I became a fan of the series. I found their most recent release, Batman: Hush, to be another stellar addition to their burgeoning animated cinematic universe (which makes the struggles of the DC Extended Universe all the more puzzling). Other releases like Batman: Gotham by Gaslight have shown how DCAOM releases take the source material and expand and twist them for a new generation.

The cast for Red Son looks great, and I can’t wait to hear what Superman sounds like with Jason Isaacs’ distinct voice coming out of his mouth.

Plot Synopsis:

Imagine a reality where the world’s most powerful super-being does not grow up in Smallville, Kansas – or even America, for that matter…

SUPERMAN: RED SON is a vivid tale of Cold War paranoia, that reveals how the ship carrying the infant who would later be known as Superman lands in the midst of the 1950s Soviet Union.  Raised on a collective, the infant grows up and becomes a symbol to the Soviet people, and the world changes drastically from what we know – bringing Superman into conflict with Batman, Lex Luthor and many others.

Superman: Red Son will be released on DVD/Blu-ray and digital download during the first quarter of 2020.

Have you read the Elseworlds tale? Will you be checking out the animated adaptation when it comes out?
