Another Stranger Things alum has joined the MonsterVerse.
Per Deadline, Matthew Modine has boarded the untitled Godzilla x Kong 3, which is scheduled to begin shooting in April in Australia. Modine originally found success as an actor in the 1980s with roles in Full Metal Jacket and Married to the Mob. Today, younger audiences will recognize him as Dr. Brenner, a.k.a. “Papa,” in Stranger Things.
In a statement shared on X, Modine expressed excitement at joining the MonsterVerse:
“I’m excited to join such an iconic and fan-driven franchise, especially getting to work alongside talents like Dan Stevens, Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, and Delroy Lindo. The [MonsterVerse] has been doing amazing things in film and beyond, and I can’t wait to get to work on this next phase of it.”
Modine’s MonsterVerse casting comes after his Stranger Things co-star Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven) co-starred in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). However, fans shouldn’t expect a reunion between Papa and Eleven in GxK 3 as Brown is not expected to reprise her role as Madison Russell in the MonsterVerse sequel.
Instead, rounding out the human cast for GxK 3 is Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, and Dan Stevens, the latter of whom is the sole returning MonsterVerse cast member. He made his franchise debut as Trapper in last year’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Grant Sputore is directing the MonsterVerse movie from a screenplay by David Callaham. Plot details remain under wraps, although Legendary has said the story will feature “several new human characters alongside the beloved and iconic Titans Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.”
Godzilla x Kong 3 is scheduled to hit theaters on March 26, 2027.
