‘Hawkeye’ Recruits ‘Troop Zero’ and ‘Comrade Detective’ Directors; Hailee Steinfeld No Longer in Running for Kate Bishop

Y’all may be excited for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier or WandaVision, but the one Disney+ series from the Marvel Cinematic Universe I am looking forward to the most is Hawkeye. And Marvel Studios has just signed on the first of its directors.

Bert and Bertie (real names Amber Finlayson and Katie Ellwood) will direct multiple episodes of the upcoming superhero show. The female writing/directing duo is best known for directing Troop Zero. Rhys Thomas, a Saturday Night Live veteran who directed the Amazon comedy series Comrade Detective, is also slated to direct multiple episodes. These may look like out of the box choices from Marvel, but let’s not forget Marvel likes picking directors with few projects under their belts and giving them this amazing sandbox to play in.

Hawkeye is expected to follow Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) as he trains Kate Bishop as his successor to the Hawkeye mantle. The series will be a loose adaptation of the recent (and celebrated) run of Hawkeye comics, which was written by Matt Fraction and drawn by David Aja. That series featured the right blend of action and comedy, and these two directing picks definitely seem like they’ll be up for the task.

Unfortunately, while this is an promising development for the show it comes at the same time we have found out that Hailee Steinfeld is no longer in the running for the role of Kate Bishop. According to The DisInsider‘s Derek Cornell (via CBR), Steinfeld has long since walked away from the role in the Hawkeye show. Unfortunately, no details were released about why she is no longer in the running, but it has been stated in the past that her commitments to Apple TV+ might get in the way from her entering the MCU.

This is a pretty big bummer as I thought Steinfeld was the perfect choice to play Bishop. However, there are plenty of young actresses working in Hollywood right now that would also make a great Bishop. I have complete faith in Marvel Studios to find the right actress for the gig.

I’ll keep you updated on who Marvel eventually casts as the female Hawkeye.
