First Look at Hulu’s Upcoming ‘Hellraiser’ Reboot

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, fans now have their first official look at the upcoming Hellraiser film, which serves as a reboot of the long-running horror franchise.

In addition to the new images which you can see above, Director David Bruckner revealed plenty of new details about Hellraiser. He confirmed that the film is not a remake of Clive Barker‘s 1987 classic, but is instead “a new story in the Hellraiser universe.”

Hulu‘s reboot will center on Riley (Odessa A’zion), a young woman struggling with addiction, who comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural beings from another dimension.

Fans were also treated to the first official look of Jamie Clayton as Cenobite leader Pinhead. The horror character was famously played by Doug Bradley in the original film and most of its sequels. Brucker explained that Pinhead has been reimagined for Hellraiser and was not inspired by any of Bradley’s previous performances as the character:

“We felt a kind of anticipation around the fans to reimagine the character. We knew we wanted Pinhead to be a woman. Jamie was just the right person for the role. […] What Doug Bradley did with the character is so iconic. We didn’t want to do a Doug Bradley impression, we just didn’t think that’s possible to do. There will be suffering, but you’re going to get a sense of what Pinhead’s desires might be in a way that hits a little different.”

Hellraiser will also feature several new Cenobites, including the one seen above, which is named The Masque. The film, which was recently rated R by the Motion Picture Association for “strong bloody horror violence and gore, language throughout, some sexual content, and brief graphic nudity,” was written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski. Barker, who wrote and directed the original Hellraiser as well as the 1986 novella “The Hellbound Heart,” on which the franchise was based, is attached to the reboot as a producer.

Hellraiser begins streaming on October 7, 2022, on Hulu.
