Netflix is already shaping its 2027 slate of Oscar contenders. The streamer just acquired Joel Coen‘s sinister gothic mystery film, Jack of Spades.
Netflix has acquired worldwide distribution rights to Jack of Spades. A Fall 2027 theatrical release for the movie is being planned, ahead of its drop on Netflix, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Jack of Spades is based on Frances Frederica Montrésor’s 1901 novel The Alien: A Story of Middle Age. It’s been described as “a sinister gothic mystery filled with intrigue and betrayal set in the atmospheric Scottish Highlands.” Coen wrote the screenplay with Ethan Coen, Eleanor Catton, and Conor McPherson.
Patsy Ferran, Josh O’Connor, Damian Lewis, and Lesley Manville star in Jack of Spades. The movie reunites Coen with cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel and longtime composer Carter Burwell.
The deal reunites the Coens with Netflix, which previously released the duo’s Western anthology feature, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, in 2018. That movie went on to receive three Oscar nominations, and Netflix is hoping Jack of Spades will also be a major awards prospect. Netflix is also reteaming here with O’Connor after Wake Up Dead Man in 2025 and his Emmy-winning turn as Prince Charles in The Crown.
Jack of Spades is slated to be released in theaters in Fall 2027.
